GBOA West - Los Angeles, CA

The top 16 grassroots basketball teams in the West kicked off GBOA Hoops 2008 at USC’s Galen Center last weekend. Many of the top teams didn't bring their A games, and Branch West toppled Inland Empire in the finals. California Supreme dominated the skills competitions with Jeremy Tyler impressing the dunk contest and Gary Franklin showing his sharpshooting skills the 3-point shootout. Looks like all of those teams will be at the GBOA Challenge of Champions in August!

Indiana's SYF Players took home the title, winning a tough battle in the finals against a talented Team Detroit. Other top teams looking to grab a coveted wild card spot to the Challenge of Champions were the Chicago-area teams Illinois Bobcats and Rising Stars Gold, as well as Indiana's Spiece Rising Stars. Old Gold and Free Mason surprised the field going 3-0 in pool play, only to be eliminated in the quarterfinals. New York City has long been known for its hoops talent, and 2008 is no exception. GBOA East will pit the top 16 teams in the East against one another for grassroots basketball supremacy. Featured teams include the Big Apple’s best in Lance Stephenson’s Juice All-Stars, as well as Grassroots Canada and the NJ Playaz. Our nation’s capital looks to make a name at GBOA East with DC Blue Devils and DC Triple Threat, and Team Phillly will look to do the City of Brotherly Love proud. However, don't sleep on the New York Panthers as they look to claim NYC bragging rights and punch their ticket to the GBOA Challenge of Champions.

GBOA South - Atlanta, GA

Hot-lanta heated up as host to GBOA’s final regional tournament, and these Southern teams looked to prove they may be last, but they are certainly not least. With the most teams in the Top 20 and more than a handful of top 2009 and 2010 prospects, GBOA South showed that the South is where the talent is. The best competition meant a tough road to the Challenge of Champions for some of these top teams, but perennial favorite Atlanta Celtics and star Derrick Favors managed to wrangle the title from Kenny Boynton, Brandon Knight and Team Breakdown.  Also in the semifinals were DeMarcus Cousins and his Birmingham Storm, who gave the Celtics a run for their money.  Worldwide Renegades also had some impressive talent including Richard Howell and Mfon Udofia, but couldn't match Team Breakdown's intensity.  The Celtics and Team Breakdown will automatically advance to the GBOA Challenge of Champions where they will battle it out for GBOA supremacy.  Will the Storm and Renegades join them?  Or did the 3-0 Memphis Magic and Joe "Action" Jackson show they are worthy of a wild card bid?  Stay tuned...
